Yogiji Maharaj was such a young, effervescent sadhu all his life – all his 78 years, 7 months and 24 days. He was such a graceful disciple, and such a master of instantaneous spiritual wisdom with liberal doses of humour, that you could only marvel at the blissfully laughing Mahatma he was widely known as. Reams of paper have been consumed describing the memorable life and times of Yogiji Maharaj, yet a lot remains still to be said about him, for, he was, to put it simply, beyond words. During his two decades as guru, he entertained and enlightened us, taught us the essential truths of life and kept us sane in difficult times. When it was time for his discourse, the devotees eagerly and expectantly waited for their daily dose of humour and wisdom in roughly equal proportions.

But, above all, the spirit of seva or service was the mainstay of his whole being. Seva was his métier. And he did it with great pleasure – whether it was for the visiting devotees, the masons on the mandir site, the sick, the sadhus or his dearest guru. At all times, it was seva he thought of, even in sleep. With seva, he felt most himself, most alive; and he inspired the youths to perform seva, which, he believed, was central to spiritual growth. He was all gung-ho for seva, whatever and whenever. Seva was his heartbeat and Shriji Maharaj and Shastriji Maharaj were his passion.
As a guru he was of a different calibre. He was great because he had that most priceless of virtues – humility. With open arms and an open smile, he encouraged the devotees to partake in the splendours of satsang. The devotees, even today, cherish memories of his rhapsodies on matters spiritual.
